Day taken from the post date ('Posted on September 6, 2026'), consistent with the N-able-assigned CVE record published 2026-09-06T03:17:17 UTC (per NVD) and Huntress being alerted 'In the early morning hours (U.S. time) of 9/6/2026'. News reports say HF4 was released 'on September 5' (US date); that is the same release seen in US time, so it is not recorded as a separate, earlier UTC day.

N-able N-central pre-auth code execution flaw exploited; fixed in 2026.3 HF4

N-able released an emergency hotfix for a maximum-severity flaw in its N-central remote management server that lets an attacker run code without logging in; N-able told customers it was being exploited.

In plain words

N-central is the tool many IT service providers use to manage and remotely control all of their customers' computers, so a break-in there can spread to every managed machine. In September 2026 N-able fixed a maximum-severity flaw that let attackers take over the server without a password, and told customers it had seen it exploited. If we or our IT provider run N-central ourselves, it must be on build 2026.3.1.14 or later, and the user list should be checked for unknown accounts. The cloud-hosted version was patched by N-able.

What happened and who is affected

What happened

On 5-6 September 2026 N-able released N-central 2026.3 Hotfix 4 (build 2026.3.1.14) to fix CVE-2026-86218, a static code injection flaw that allows pre-authentication remote code execution on the N-central server, rated 10.0. N-able's public release notes said it had no confirmation of exploitation, while its notice to customers and incident page said the flaw had been observed being exploited in the wild. CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 8 September. It followed two other N-central hotfix rounds in August and early September 2026.

Who is affected

Self-hosted (on-premises) N-central servers on any build earlier than 2026.3.1.14 (2026.3 HF4), including 2026.3 HF3. Hosted N-central (NCOD) instances were patched by N-able.

CVE-2026-86218. Reviewed 22 Oct 2026. https://daystopatch.com/incidents/n-able-cve-2026-86218/

  • N-able N-central hosted (NCOD)
How we built this timeline

Conflicting vendor statements on exploitation: N-able's public HF4 notice says 'At this time, we have no confirmations that this vulnerability has been exploited in production environments', while its MSPGeek post and uptime incident page (https://uptime.n-able.com/event/201814/, quoted by Huntress) and an urgent customer notice (quoted by Help Net Security and The Hacker News) say it was exploited in the wild and call it a zero-day. We set exploited before a fix=true on the strength of the vendor's own exploitation statements at fix time.

CORRECTION PASS 23 Oct 2026: the earlier First fix/Fixed for all versions candidates of 5 Sep 2026 (Help Net Security, The Hacker News) were US-local dates for the same release and put the patch a day before the first public notice; all moments now use the UTC-consistent 6 Sep 2026 (status post date; CVE record 6 Sep 2026; the post body says 'Last Updated: Sept 5th 2026', i.e.

US time). Context: Huntress investigated a compromise of a fully patched N-central production environment from 4 Sep 2026 and could not say which CVE was used (CVE-2026-86206/86207 fixed in HF3, or this one).

Separate incidents: n-able-cve-2026-18577 (August hotfixes). The me.n-able.com advisory page requires JavaScript and its Wayback snapshot only renders a loading error, so it is not cited.

CVSS 10.0 is N-able's CNA CVSS 4.0 score (NVD: 9.8 v3.1).
