No brief for this incident yet. We write one for every open incident and every critical bug exploited before a fix.

Affected products

  • Linux kernel 6.0 up to 6.1.176, 6.6.143, 6.12.94, 6.18.37, 7.1.2 (ipv6: __ip6_append_data)
How we built this timeline

Kernel moment model: vendor/world = the kernel CNA's CVE publication (first security-labelled public signal); First fix = first stable or mainline release containing the fix (R2: counts even though it precedes the CVE);

Fixed for all versions = the last of the stable/LTS releases the CVE record lists as fixed (R6: provided every then-supported affected line is listed). Release dates come from kernel.org ChangeLog files.

The fix is normally public in stable releases before the CVE is published, so exposure is zero. Downstream lag (Android, distributions) is not graded here.

Exception here: a public exploit appeared about 6 days before the first stable fix, so world is the PoC and exposure is non-zero. exploited before a fix=false under R4: the first fix (4 Jul 2026) was public before the earliest public evidence of exploitation (CISA KEV, 27 Aug 2026; ctipilot.ch: 'no public exploitation narrative ... has been located'); a public PoC is not evidence of in-the-wild exploitation. (Was null before the 23 Oct 2026 correction pass.) Red Hat bulletin RHSB-2026-009 ('Public Date: July 1, 2026') covers RHEL.

CVSS 7.8 from the kernel CNA record. Audit-2 T2 re-check (23 Oct 2026): no later report places exploitation before the 4 Jul 2026 fix, so false stands.

The University of Wisconsin advisory of early July says 'There are no reports of it being exploited in the wild.'; Red Hat RHSB-2026-009, the Fedora CoreOS tracker, ctipilot.ch, Security Arsenal and AiCybr date exploitation only from CISA's KEV listing (27 Aug 2026).

One unverified wiki-style page (Baidu Baike) mentions a compromise on 14 Jul 2026, which is after the fix. Searched: web and news for post-mortems and IR reports, and the sources above.
